There is an intense duality in nostalgia. On the one hand, it resurrects the beauty and simplicity of the past and permits a momentary yet truly meaningful reliving. But when accompanied by loss, nostalgia seems to amplify and distort the pain into something truly unbearable. As humans we crave even the latter kind of nostalgia, for a pain that connects us to something lost is better than the pain of loss alone. In this way, to walk with my friend where we walked before is a beautiful thing, but to walk alone where we walked before is both a beautiful and a terrible thing.
