During the India-Pakistan War of 1971, the Battle of Laungewala emerged as a pivotal moment in the conflict. In the dead of night on December 4th, 1971, Pakistani forces launched a fierce assault on the Longewala border post, manned by the brave soldiers of the 23 PUNJAB regiment. Despite facing overwhelming odds, the Indian troops stood their ground, determined to defend their position at all costs.

Realizing the gravity of the situation, the Indian soldiers urgently called upon the support of the Indian Air Force (IAF). As dawn broke on December 5th, 1971, Hunter aircraft from the 122 Squadron stationed at Jaisalmer took to the skies, unleashing a devastating barrage of firepower upon the advancing Pakistani troops.

In a remarkable display of courage and precision, the Hunters flew 18 sorties, raining destruction upon the enemy ranks. Their relentless assault resulted in the destruction of 36 enemy tanks, obliteration of 100 vehicles, and the loss of 200 Pakistani soldiers, effectively halting the advance of the Pakistani army in its tracks.
