When is a milkshake not a milkshake? When its a metaphor. Food and love making have always been linked, as are both essential parts of life, base level physiological needs. And while combined seems like a good idea in the moment, in reality often ends in unpleasant stickiness, itching and potential infection. But pop music, pop music has always had an attraction for suggestive culinary lyrics. While sometimes used to avoid censorship, there is something to be gained from a little subtlety in art. Not every artist can be a poet of Trent Reznor-proportions. But what is the history of the practice from the days of Little Richard's Tutti Frutti and Robert Johnson through Sugar, Sugar by the Archies, The Stranglers' Peaches and through to Cake By the Ocean by DNCE and Cola by Lana Del Rey, what are the best examples and most importantly, what is “Milkshake” actually about?
