Elvis and Blue Christmas, one of the greatest Christmas songs ever.
Written by Billy Hayes and Jay Johnson. The original was from Doye O’Dell in 1948, covered by Ernest Tubb in 1949.
Elvis included the song on his 1957 album – Elvis’ Christmas Album, recorded on 5 September. RCA set up a Christmas tree with presents underneath, to help with the mood
Re-issued in 1964:
In America – coupled with Wooden Heart. It failed to trouble the Billboard Hot-100 but made #2 on their Christmas Singles chart.
In the UK – coupled with White Christmas. It peaked at #11.
The 1968 TV Comeback Special started out as a Christmas Special but Blue Christmas was the only song to retain the Festive spirit.
