For tens of thousands of years, the global population remained small and grew slowly, often limited by disease, famine, and environmental challenges. Around 8,000 BCE, the agricultural revolution allowed communities to settle, cultivate food, and support larger populations. Still, it took millennia for the world to reach its first billion people, around the early 1800s.
Since then, advances in medicine, sanitation, and technology have caused a dramatic population surge. More than half of all humans who have ever lived were born in just the last 200 years. Today, over 8 billion people are alive — roughly 7% of everyone who has ever existed.
This perspective highlights how recent human expansion is in the grand arc of history. The 117 billion lives before us represent countless cultures, innovations, and stories, forming the foundation of our modern world — and reminding us that we are part of a much larger human journey.
