What happens if I drive my car through water?

Driving through water can have several outcomes depending on the water depth and your vehicle:

For shallow water (a few inches):
- Water may splash up into the engine compartment
- Your brakes might temporarily lose effectiveness until they dry out
- You may hydroplane if going too fast

For deeper water (6+ inches):
- Water can be pulled into the engine through the air intake (causing "hydrolocking")
- This can cause immediate engine damage requiring expensive repairs
- Electrical systems may short out
- Interior flooding can damage electronics and upholstery

For very deep water (12+ inches):
- Your vehicle may float and lose traction/steering control
- Water pressure can prevent doors from opening
- Complete engine failure is likely
- Risk of being swept away in moving water

As a rule of thumb, you should avoid driving through water if:
- You can't see the bottom
- It's deeper than halfway up your wheels
- It has a current
- There's no clear exit point

If you must drive through shallow water, go very slowly (1-2 mph) and maintain steady throttle pressure without shifting gears.
