Sunny showed off the ‘4 days older advantage’ several times on Sunday, as it develops and gets stronger just a bit ahead of Gizmo.Both of them had a nap after breakfast, but Sunny was awake first and up for a junior wing yoga stretch, just like Jackie often does in the morning. Then the next stretch included standing up and balancing maneuvers—it all still looked a bit clumsy and challenging, but improvement is showing. Sunny even managed to back up, uphill, to aim its poop shot off of the side of the nest.
But all that activity and showing off apparently upset Gizmo, who was still trying to nap. First came some bites on the beak as Sunny bent over to balance. When Sunny didn’t react to that, Gizmo got braver and stood up to do a full blown ‘bonk.’ That got instant counter bonks from Sunny. So, Gizmo immediately submitted, bent over, head down. “I give up. You win. You're still bigger.”
Sunny went back to focusing its toddler energy on fancy wing-flapping and standing exercises…sit down, rest, sit up, flap, stand up, oops, tip over, stand, careful, balance, rest, repeat.
And Sunny’s wingersizing got bigger and stronger later in the morning…and oops, it was surely an accident that Sunny’s widespread wings brushed across the top of Gizmo’s body in their natural movement.
Later in the day, under Jackie’s supervision, Sunny was again more awake and active than younger Gizmo and this time found a nice curious toy to play with…a baby pine cone.
Sunny was completely fascinated with this new toy, pulling it in different directions, raising it up, twisting it around and even managing to push it over the top of a big stick. The feather stuck to the pine cone certainly made it all the more fascinating. Gizmo thought about watching for a short time but then went back to sleep.
And its possible that Jackie’s look at the pine cone play included a small eye-roll, but certainly a loving, proud one.
As we continue watching Sunny and Gizmo’s continued fast development, it will be curious to watch whether Gizmo copies Sunny’s moves or finds its own unique ways of growing into itself.
