I’ve been playing guitar for many years now, and like a lot of players, I grew up idolizing guys like Steve Vai and Eric Johnson for their insane speed and technical chops. I used to think the faster they played, the better. So when they slowed down, I didn’t pay much attention.. I just waited for the next flurry of notes.
But man… I wish I had taken those slower moments more seriously.
It wasn’t until years later, after really digging into their phrasing and tone, that I realized that’s where the real mastery is. The control, the touch, the emotion.. they’re not just shredders, they’re storytellers. And when they play slowly, every note has weight. It’s not just impressive.. it’s moving.
In this video, I break down why their slower playing deserves just as much (if not more) attention than their faster passages, and what we as players can learn from it. Whether you're a beginner chasing feel, or a seasoned player stuck in the speed trap.. Trust me, this will change how you hear them.
