Why I didn’t use fertilizer:I planted a cover crop last fall in this area to encourage beneficial insects and add nutrients back into the soil. I cut the cover crop back in early May, covered it with a tarp, and then planted my sweet potatoes once all the foliage died back (early June.)
The seeds for the cover crop cost me ~$3 for 200 of them and I still have a TON left that I was able to use again this year.
Sweet potatoes are heavy feeders but I wanted to see what happened if I didn’t feed them and instead used nature to help me.
Unfortunately the growing season was cut short for these plants when a groundhog decided to munch on all of the leaves! Imagine if that didn’t happen, my harvest may be even bigger!
