I decided to take a break from the Drum Break series to show an exercise to strengthen tone and timing. Having the conscious ability to count and know where you are at is a skill that can be developed as high or far as you want. When it comes to being able to compose or experiment with your soloing, improvising, etc. understanding basic music theory as it pertains to rhythm is a helpful skill. Using a metronome and practicing counting and transitions from different note values (such as quarter notes, eighth notes, etc.) will take your playing to another level. This lesson is geared towards beginners however I have found in my experience that there are many percussionists and musicians that are gigging, performing or volunteering in their worship band/team that have not developed this skill to a certain level. Developing this skill is a good step in helping the problem of not knowing what to play.
