"Side A of this compelling Ocora record from Gabon, in Equatorial Africa, features ritual music of the Bwiti, an all-male secret society within the Mitsogho tribe. Initiates must undergo a long and complex initiation process that includes ingestion of the sacred iboga tree, whose bitter root is chewed in order to enter other dimensions and see the past, present, and future of their own lives. This multi-sensory journey is conducted under the guidance of elders who interpret the initiates' spectacular visions, a journey each initiate will experience one more time on the day of his death. Bwiti masks (pictured) are used during the ceremony. This initiation is essential to Mitsogho culture and adepts assume the role of cultural and religious guardians bound by total secrecy. Side B features vocal and instrumental music of the Batéké."

Batéké music recorded July - August 1965 in the region of Léconi and on the Tsoulo (Haut-Ogooué) track.
