The protesters had blocked sections of the Pan-American Highway for several days. The police used tear gas to disperse the protestors. According to the local media, several were injured during the protests. The miners operated for decades under a law that sought to regulate their practices, which expired in June. Mining associations and unions have said about 50,000 jobs would be lost following the permit cancellations.
