Should you play guitar perfectly or with heart?

Well, both...

Sometimes on the guitar playing super clean and precise is exactly what you need. Other times, you have to let loose and just play.

The technique I cover in this video is more of a laid back and less precise rhythm technique that can add some fullness to your acoustic blues. I picked this up from watching and listening to several acoustic blues greats.

Watch Eric Clapton do a rendition of Love in Vain on acoustic if you want to see what I'm talking about.

This technique is called the "brush up" technique. In the video, I'll show you a short example of a Piedmont infused vamp on an A chord. The brush up really helps to highlight the melody in the piece. You can hear a subtle difference in the part when I play it cleanly without the brush up technique versus when I pull through the notes a little more.

As I mention in the video, you can certainly "Brush Down" with your thumb to and that really adds some cool overtones in the lower register on the guitar.

Give this a try and keep in mind this is a subtle difference, but it's going to be just one more trick in your bag.
