Module 2 – Separating Gold from Black Sands: Clean Concentrates for Pure Gold

You’ve collected your concentrates—now it’s time to get surgical. In this module, we break down the critical process of removing black sands from your gold concentrates. This isn’t just about improving looks—it’s about preparing your material for smelting, so you can produce pure gold with minimal waste.

Black sands are the dark, heavy minerals that settle with gold in your pan or sluice box. They include magnetite, hematite, garnet, and sometimes fine sulfides. While they’re usually harmless, they can make smelting difficult and reduce recovery if left in your gold.

Here’s the problem: black sands act like a sponge. They absorb heat in your crucible and dilute your flux. If you don’t remove them, you’ll waste fuel, clog your mold with slag, and possibly lose fine gold in the waste glass.

2. Use a magnet over a plastic container. Place your concentrates in a thin layer and run the magnet over the surface. Iron-rich magnetite will rise and cling to the magnet. Use a ziplock bag or glove to catch and discard.
3. Add water and Jet-Dry to your pan. Jet-Dry breaks surface tension and stops gold from floating. Swirl gently and let the gold settle while the lighter material flows off.
4. Run the material over a miller table. Gold will cling to the mat while black sands flow off. Adjust water flow and angle for best separation.
5. Inspect under magnification. Repeat until you can’t see black specs mixed with your gold.

Not all black sands are magnetic. Garnet, rutile, and certain iron-stained quartz fragments will stay behind after your magnet pass. That’s where your gravity tools come in. Spiral bowls and miller tables use tiny water flows and precise angles to tease gold from stubborn sands.

A finishing pan can help with the final touch—just a few teaspoons at a time, swirling gently until only clean gold remains in the center.
