On 26 January 1994, Prince Charles, Prince of Wales was shot at while on stage at an Australia Day event in Tumbalong Park, Sydney. Showing no signs of alarm as the shots rang out, the Prince of Wales was elbowed out of harm's way by his Senior Personal Protection Officer, Superintendent Colin Trimming, while other members of Charles' security team piled on attacker David Kang as he rushed the stage. Rather than being an assassination attempt, it turned out that Kang, an Australian anthropology student, had loaded his pistol with blank rounds. He later explained that he fired the shots in protest against the treatment of hundreds of Cambodian asylum seekers who were being held in Australian detention camps.
