Description:
In this video we'll have a look on the russian town of Barentsburg. Well, this town is really special because although being a russian town, it is completely surrounded by Norway. This is because it is located on the Svalbard archipelago. You'll have to see the video to understand what on earth Russia wanted on Svalbard, but I can tell you that some communist ambitions of the Soviet Union were involved.
We'll talk more about all of this in this video, so make sure you do not miss it.
Feel free to write your opinion about this in the commnets.
Hope you'll enjoy the video!

Transcript:
Did you know that Russia has a town which is completely surrounded by Norway? This is Barentsburg, a town home to just 455 people. This area north of the mainland Norway is called Svalbard and it was discovered in the 16th century. Svalbard remained open to everyone until The Paris Peace Conference when it was decided that Svalbard should be part of Norway, but with a lot of conditions. One of them was that any country that was part to the treaty was allowed to use Svalbard natural resources and any citizen of any country was allowed to come to Svalbard without a visa.
In the 1930s, The Soviet Union bought a mining town called Barentsburg from the Dutch and Because Svalbard was visa-free, anyone could come and see their town, and they wanted to create an example of the communism success. At its peak, around 1500 people lived in Barentsburg, but after The Soviet Union collapsed, the city has been in a steady decline. This town is kept alive by the Russian government because Barentsburg sits in the middle of some key sea routes in the Arctic which will become a very important area as the climate is changing.
