Our last week of work on the property was a busy one with lots of last-minute projects coming together! We had to repair the closet wall (which started to crumble during the bathroom demo!), we finished the plaster on the bedroom walls, and we finally got our kitchen cabinets delivered and installed.

However, it wasn't a week without its hiccups - mainly the fact that we kept losing electric power! It was a week of strong winds and the electricity went out in our village at least 3 times over the course of the week.

We also had to pack up our rental house and haul our suitcases over to our place, which is easier said than done when it's all dirt roads and bush. I'm sure we looked pretty ridiculous hauling stuff over stone fences, but I think our neighbours are used to our antics at this point.

Our time in Argentina flew by and we also wish we could have done more, but at the end of the day, we're pretty happy with our progress despite a rough start. The house is almost move in ready and we think that one more month of work will do the trick before we can actually move in! But for now, it's off to Buenos Aires and then Canada for a little while!

TIME to PACK it UP! ⌛👋 | Last Week Renovating and Restoring an Abandoned House in Argentina

🏡 DIY Property & Renovation Update | Cement Repair, Cabinets & More in Rural Argentina 🇦🇷

Sometimes you don’t want to tackle a job because you feel unqualified… and then you pay a pro—only to find they made it worse! 😤 Here’s a whirlwind tour of our latest DIY adventures (and misadventures) on our 7-hectare hobby farm outside Córdoba. From cement patching to kitchen cabinet install, caulking tips, landscaping & even a peek at Argentine currency woes, here’s what went down—in order:

Power Outages & Country Sunsets
– Village blackout for days; favourite sunset stroll down the Eucalyptus Avenue 🌅

Monopoly-Money Mode
– Building “from the ground up” meant accumulating clothes & tools—proof of our sweat equity 💪

Closet Repair Phase 1
– Bathroom reno debris crumbled the closet wall → emptied the closet & inspected the damage

Mixing & Applying Mortar
– Dad’s DIY mortar: 3 parts sand + 1 part lime + 25% cement 🚧
– Wet the surface, use a wooden float, smooth & let the first coat “pull”

Pro Sloppy Patch?
– Rant: When pros leave bricks sticking out, it’s worse than doing it yourself 😆

Surprise Delivery: Acrylic Caulking
– 6 tubes of SEDAC® acrylic sealant arrived—our go-to from Canada for crisp edges 🏆

More Power Cuts & Working in the Dark
– Finishing the closet in low light… not ideal, but we’re committed! 🔦

DIY Caulking Masterclass
– Tip: Cut the tip at 45°, squeeze & drag, then smooth with a damp rag for perfect seams 🔧

Inflation Reality Check
– Argentina’s 1,000-peso bill ≈ US$1 → hauling ₱1.2 million by wheelbarrow to pay rent 💸

Landscaping: Clearing the Eucalyptus Avenue
– Hired crew cleared decades of overgrowth → now a golden sunset walkway 🌳
– Branch piles sorted for fencing vs. firewood; planning controlled burns 🔥
– Noting 80-year-old pines at end-of-life—time to replant native trees 🌱

Closet Repair Phase 2 & DIY Encouragement
– After drying, final skim coat of mortar → walls almost invisible 👍
– Moral: sometimes DIY beats a “professional” hiccup

Memory-Lane Hangers
– Found cedar‐wood hangers from our childhood—moth-repellent nostalgia! 🧥

Packing & Hauling Stuff
– Accumulated kitchen gadgets, tools & clothing into new closet space 📦
– Stored plumbing pipes in guest bedroom; stacked firewood on pallets to avoid rot 🌲

Kitchen Cabinet Install Day
– Hired carpenter’s final visit—hand-made U-shaped cabinets from reclaimed roof boards 🪵
– Deep drawers, perfect fit & sturdy build—worth the wait!

Dad’s Quality Inspection
– Identified woods: incense-cedar, lapacho, pine—over 80 years old & nearly extinct 🌳
– Hardy timbers planed with difficulty but now shine in our new kitchen

Last-Minute To-Do’s Before Canada
– Fireplace & water hook-ups, fridge/freezer, washer & furniture still to come
– Locking up the chalet like Fort Knox 🔒

Final Reflections
– Major progress on chalet, closets, cabinets & landscaping 🚀
– Learned to embrace DIY, found reliable local crews & glimpsed the finish line 🏁
– Physically tiring in the rural heat & power cuts—but incredibly rewarding
