The airport covers an area of 1,160 ha (4.5 sq mi). The foundation stone for the project was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 18 February 2018, and construction was started in August 2021, after more than three years of land acquisition. It is expected to be completed and become operational by December 2024.
