We always wanted 'A Place in France' and back in February 2022 we signed our Acte Authentique De Vente. so we could pick up the keys to our grande maison. The windows were rotten and broken. We had just 4 days to fix them. There were major storms hitting Europe and we were heading for another COVID lockdown.
Some 'French Leave', was on the cards.
We had only a couple of tools and zero skills.
The last time I had attempted woodwork, it was 1981. I was 12 and I failed the class quite miserably.
I now had to make double glazed 14mm oak windows in a 3rd floor loft space, whilst terrified of heights.
We got quotes to get windows made. cheapest quote was over £2600 and the most expensive was nearly £4750. - fitting was extra.
The standard rate in France seemed to range between 2000 and 3000 euros per square meter. Which was way above our budget.
I needed to go full DIY... What could possibly go wrong? - There's 'No going back' once I rip them out!
If my sums were correct, I reckoned I could them both for less than £250.
Une maison anglaise est son Château
==============================
Living in this English man's castle were pine martins, rats, lizards, snakes, birds, bats and other creatures. There was live wood worm, rot, broken glass, ice and forty years of detritus.
