In the heart of the deep south stands an abandoned funeral home that was once recognized as a beacon for compassionate care when it came to funerals and funeral services for loved ones. It’s story reflects, not only the evolution of funeral care, but also the enduring spirit of an entire family dedicated to supporting other people during life‘s most challenging moments and how the once beloved funeral home had eventually become a disgrace, taking advantage of the same community that it once set out to help serve.
Founded over 100 years ago, this funeral home began as a modest establishment focused on providing dignity in death. The funeral home was started by a local church deacon as he envisioned a place where families could find additional support and comfort. He committed himself to the highest standard of care, leading to a successful reputation and as the years passed on, a steady growing funeral business.
In the 1950’s, the church deacon and funeral home founder, passed down the business to his son, who took the reins and went on to innovate the business with more modern technology and practices. Under the son’s direction, the funeral home became the first in the region to offer pre-need planning, a concept that now allowed families to make funeral arrangement ahead of time, alleviating stress during the difficult grieving period. This was a huge boost for the already booming funeral business, helping it to continue to grow throughout the next upcoming decades. Unfortunately in the 2000’s, the son was forced to retire after having serious medical problems. He made the difficult decision to take a step back from the daily operations of his pride and joy, the same pride and joy that his father before him had worked so hard to achieve. When he did finally retire, he handed down the funeral home business to his only son and surely expected him to continue to carry on the family legacy that his grandfather had started nearly 100 years before.
For the most part, the funeral home continued to play its part in helping thousands of families to help bury their loved ones, but in 2017, the father passed away.
This left the funeral home with very little oversight and seemingly lost all connection to the long standing family traditions that had helped make this funeral home so successful in the beginning.
The funeral home had went downhill so fast that upset family members and relatives of the deceased began to take to the internet to warn others of just how bad the situation had gotten. Some reviews talked of scams, rip offs, inadequate refunds, rude customer service, poor communication, botched embalmings, and even missing remains. Some of these complaints went on to become lawsuits with some seeing court dates.
Unfortunately, for the plaintiffs the funeral home owner suddenly and unexpectedly passed away in 2022 and all lawsuits were then dismissed.
Since the latest owner and original owner’s grandson died in 2022, the old funeral home had sat abandoned, slowly falling into disrepair. With everything left inside and now that sections of the building have started to collapse, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for this one time community staple. And that will take us to the end of today’s video on the abandoned funeral home.
