series of brutal wars. Now, it’s split into seven independent nations, including Serbia and
Croatia.
East Germany! After WWII, Germany was divided. East Germany was under Soviet control until
1990, when the Berlin Wall fell, and the country reunited with the West.
Rhodesia! This country existed in southern Africa from 1965 to 1979. After a civil war, it became
the modern nation of Zimbabwe
Gran Colombia! Formed by Simon Bolivar in the early 1800s, it included Colombia, Venezuela,
Ecuador, and Panama. But internal conflicts broke it apart after just 12 years.
And finally, Austria-Hungary! This huge empire dissolved after World War I, splitting into Austria,
Hungary, and several other countries.
These countries may be gone, but their stories live on!
