Professor M Shamim Z Bosunia, a revered academician and expert in structural engineering, underscores the necessity of integrated infrastructural projects to effectively address Dhaka’s road transport crisis.
In the face of challenges such as indiscipline in public transport, inadequate planning, traffic mismanagement, a dearth of technical workforce, and constrained road capacity, the octogenarian engineer acknowledges the formidable task of bringing about change in the current scenario.
He remains optimistic, stating, ‘A country cannot sustain itself in this manner.’
Engaged in various transport sector projects, Professor Bosunia chairs the panel of experts for the Mass Rapid Transit Line 6 project, popularly known as the metro rail, while also holding leadership roles at Abode of Consultants (Pvt) Ltd.
In an exclusive interview with New Age Business magazine, Bosunia acknowledges the positive impacts of recent infrastructural developments in the capital.
He contends that fostering positive change for swift movement of people would significantly boost economic activities.
He, however, highlighted that due to the immense population pressure, the benefits of these projects struggle to manifest effectively.
Citing data from the ‘National Report’ of the Population and Housing Census 2022, conducted by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics and published in November, the country’s total population has reached 169,828,911. Within the Dhaka division, home to the highest population, 26.88 per cent or 4.56 crore people reside, as per the report.
The professor highlighted that the current population distribution favours urban areas, particularly Dhaka, as many have migrated seeking better educational and employment opportunities, leaving rural areas with fewer inhabitants.
