In 1901, during the Philippine–American War, the small coastal town of Balangiga in Samar became the site of one of the deadliest ambushes in U.S. military history. Nearly an entire American company was wiped out in what is now known as the Balangiga Massacre, that exposed the brutal underbelly of U.S. colonization in the Philippines. In retaliation, General Jacob Smith launched a scorched-earth campaign that burned villages, displaced entire communities, and made headlines for his infamous kill order: “kill everyone over ten.” Long buried in U.S. history books, the Balangiga incident reveals a darker legacy of American empire, military violence, and war crimes in Southeast Asia. At the center of it all were three church bells, taken as war trophies and held overseas for more than a century, until their controversial return reignited debates on historical justice, memory, and colonial accountability.
