Chronic kidney disease, also called chronic kidney failure, describes the gradual loss of kidney function. Kidneys filter wastes and excess fluids from your blood, which are then excreted in your urine. When chronic kidney disease reaches an advanced stage, dangerous levels of fluid, electrolytes and wastes can build up in your body.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) ?
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) occurs when one suffers from gradual and usually permanent loss of kidney function over time.
This happens gradually, usually over months to years.
Chronic kidney disease is divided into five stages of increasing severity.
Stage 1- The beginning and stage 5 is the end stage there is total or near-total loss of kidney function.
Chronic kidney disease sometimes results from uncontrolled diabetes, uncontrolled high blood pressure, chronic kidney infections, polycystic kidney disease ( hereditary cause )
Use of analgesics such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and naproxen regularly over long durations of time.
Clogging and hardening of the arteries.
Obstruction of the flow of urine by stones.
Other causes include:
HIV infection
Sickle cell disease
Heroin abuse
Amyloidosis
Kidney stones
Certain cancer
Signs and symptoms of Chronic kidney disease
Need to urinate frequently especially at night ( nocturia )
Swelling of the legs and puffiness around the eyes (fluid retention).
High blood pressure
Fatigue and weakness
Loss of appetite nausea and vomiting.
Itching, easy bruising and pale skin (from anemia).
Shortness of breath from fluid accumulation in the lungs.
Headaches, numbness in the feet or hands, disturbed sleep.
Chest pain due to pericarditis ( inflammation around the heart)
Bleeding ( due to poor blood clotting)
Bone pain and fractures.
How can I prevent CKD ?
Control diabetes and high blood pressure.
Follow a low-salt low-fat diet.
Exercise at least 30 minutes on most days of th week.
Have regular check-ups with your doctor.
Do not smoke or use tobacco.
Limit alcohol
