With just a light coating of oil they simply come to life, adding warmth and quality to the room.
When we moved in, the walls were black with mold and there was a disgusting smell in the room similar to a badgers set. On the ceiling was 1970's flock wallpaper. The damp conditions meant that it was hanging down and the suspended spiders web had become weighted down with hundreds of flies.
Upon detaching the first sheet of plasterboard, we quickly realized the ceiling was home to a huge bee colony. A local bee specialist was called in to remove a 2 meter square bee hive.
Also in the ceiling, we found a pine martin roost, snake skins, several rodent skulls, plus six wheel barrow loads of the smelliest old nesting material imaginable.
On the positive side, we discovered glorious chestnuts beams, they were in fabulous condition, with virtually no woodworm. They were hand-cut; probably by axe. They would have been from the surrounding woodland as there are several chestnut trees within meters of our house.
They have not been stained, or dis-coloured, which probably means there was no open fire in this room. We will treat them for woodworm and apply teak oil.
In between the beams, we have added 75mm natural wool insulation and a layer of foil to reflect cold and heat. This may not give a very French look to the room, but it does make it very traditional.
