At her fourth Olympic Winter Games, Xu Mengtao won gold in women’s freestyle aerials at the age of 31, becoming the first Chinese woman to do so.
The home crowd in Beijing roared as her final jump, a triple-twisting triple backflip, earned a decisive 108.61 points and secured her victory at Zhangjiakou Genting Snow Park. Though not executed perfectly, a crucial landing score of 7.8 helped her edge out Belarus’ Hanna Huskova (107.95) in a dramatic final.
Xu had previously won silver in Sochi 2014 also took silver in the Mixed Team Aerials event earlier in the Beijing Games. She capped off Beijing 2022 as one of China’s flag bearers at the closing ceremony.
