So I had a long chat with him about FM synthesis, and by the end of it, I found out that the secret to this warm FM sound comes from his use of a very unique Eurorack analog oscillator. Now I had to figure out how to replicate this sound in the digital world.
The first step was to study the oscillator to understand how it operates. The second step was finding the right tool for the job. Because I was dealing with a unique oscillator, I couldn't simply find a synthesizer that would perfectly replicate its sound. I actually had to assemble it in VCV Rack using analog-emulated modules. After some trial and error, I found that FMing a self-resonating Zzzorb filter from Alright Devices with an Even VCO from Befaco gives a really close timbre to what I hear from Cosinus.
Now all I had to do was set the sample rate to something high like 48kHz or even 96kHz to get the warmest results possible, and then record some FM lines, Cosinus-style.
