Christopher Gadsden was politician and businessman from South Carolina, and a member of the Marine Committee of the Second Continental Congress. Gadsden presented a flag, with the now famous rattlesnake and motto "Don't Tread On Me", to the head of the Continental Navy, Esek Hopkins, who flew the flag as his own personal standard.
