On 6 August 1973, ITN's Lyndall Hobbs investigated the norm of parents leaving their babies outside supermarkets while going about their shopping inside. After outbreak of "baby snatching", Hobbs was keen to understand what led parents to leave their babies in the street, a widespread practice that might seem irresponsible to a 21st Century observer. Hobbs and her camera team timed one parent who left her sleeping baby unattended for over 20 minutes. Upon speaking to several parents, Hobbs found that most were uncomfortable leaving their children outside and did so reluctantly. Many parents said supermarkets did not do enough to accomodate young children; shopping aisles were too narrow for prams, while most trolleys did not yet have baby seats.
