On 19 May 1987, Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock unveiled his party's manifesto for that year's general election. Entitled "Britain Will Win", the document articulated a "modest" set of policies and pledges, designed to contrast with Labour's election-losing 1983 manifesto, which had been dubbed "the longest suicide note in history". In a speech as well as a post-event interview with ITN, Kinnock emphasised the sense of economic realism and fiscal responsibility that had shaped the manifesto's contents, and played down divides in the Labour Party over issues such as nuclear disarmament.
