I haven't used this little sampler in a while but it seems that there's a fairly widely held opinion that "no real musician uses Teenage Engineering gear" and that they're just "toys for hipsters and fanboys."
Frankly I don't care what you call me personally but to insist that this stuff can't be used to make decent music is utterly absurd. Anyways I had some fun with that presumption and one way to get me to do something is to tell me that I can't.
So, a bit of detail on the process here (because the video is a bit psychedelic):
The KO II is handling the vast majority of the track here with drums, bass, pads, voice and some keys. I tracked the mix straight out of the machine into a stereo pair on my interface. I then layered my Korg Monotribe (for that sweet, analog goodness) and added my Yamaha Reface CP for a few extra leads.
I thought parts of it had kind of an Air (French band) kind of vibe to it so that's why I composed the thumbnail the way I did. I also let that aesthetic influence the way I styled the video.
I'd like to rework some of this and redo the baseline with a real bass, probably replace the pads with a non-sample based synth and perhaps get a bit more creative with the arrangement. I find it gets a tad static and loopy in parts.
Anyways, I'm happy with what I've made here and how I've made it.
At the end of the day, use whatever you've got and whatever makes you happy. Synths and samplers are tools and owning one isn't an accomplishment in itself. The only "bad gear" is the gear that sits around never getting used.
Happy creating, folks.
