30 years ago Bernie Sanders stood up for LGBTQ+ soldiers after a Republican Congressman Duke Cunningham took aim at liberals for 'putting homos in the military'.
In 1995, the then House of Representatives member for Vermont Bernie Sanders said: "You have insulted thousands of men and women who have put their lives on the line. I think you owe them an apology".
Cunningham was sentenced in 2005 to more than eight years in prison for accepting bribes totaling $2.4 million and tax evasion.
Last week, the US Supreme Court allowed President Donald Trump's ban on transgender troops in the military to go ahead.
