I’m sure everybody knows the oldest city in America is St. Augustine, Florida, but you’ll never guess the second oldest.
In 1565, the Spanish established St. Augustine on the east coast, and you might assume the second oldest city would be in the same area, or at least somewhere along the east coast—but it’s not. It’s not even in the Midwest or on the Mississippi River.
The second oldest city is… right here in New Mexico. In the 1600s, Spain wanted a northern outpost to defend their claim over newly conquered Mexico City against English and French colonizers, and they found just the right spot: this plateau. In 1610, they completed the construction of the second oldest city in America—Santa Fe, New Mexico.
