I first met J.J. Barnes in 1971 when my first business venture with my Father, was to put him on at Blackpool Mecca. I had written an article about him when I was fifteen for Collectors Soul Magazine called "J.J. Barnes The Uncrowned King Of Soul" Eighteen years later he signed to Motorcity and recorded about twenty five songs, "Talk Of The Grapevine" being the stand out one. Thirteen years after that he appeared at the Togetherness Weekender in Morecambe, and while there we filmed both "Talk Of The Grapevine" and "On Top Of The World". The 45 which we released, on the Achievement label, is probably the best of all the twenty odd recordings I made with J.J. Barnes for Motorcity Records. A joyous piece of classic soul with an attitude and optimism which epitomises everything I could ever want to cram into one three minute single. I wrote the A side with JJ himself, and the B side song with Junior Giscombe, and J.J. recorded it in 1991. I love it now more than ever. We shot the video in Morecambe while he was appearing at the Togetherness Soul Weekender, at the same time as we also shot the video for "Talk Of The Grapevine" in 2002. J.J. reigns supreme, and, although while at Motown, he always lived in Marvin Gaye's footsteps, now nobody can hold a candle to him. He still sings as wonderfully as he did when he was twenty years old. Ortheia Barnes is the sister of Northern Soul legend J.J. Barnes, and in fact for Motorcity, I cut a great duet with the pair of them, called "Send Some Love". Ortheia made some rare Northern Soul singles for Coral Records, before joining the Detroit girl group Cut Glass. Cut Glass was Ortheia Barnes and Mildred Scott. The Disco classic, "Without Your Love" came out in 1979 on Twentieth Century and by the early eighties was fetching £100 a copy. It was one of the biggest floorfillers at both Heaven in London and The Saint in New York. In 1989, while doing the Motorcity project, I was recording Ortheia anyway, so I decided to have her redo the legendary cult High-Energy classic, which was a joy to behold. In Detroit in 1990, it was Sylvia Moy who suggested that we record brother and sister together on an amazing duet. And so "Send Some Love" was created and released as a 45 on the Livalot label.
