Actually a misnomer, there was no war. Just lots of bananas.

No but seriously though. The Banana Wars were a series of US military interventions in Central America and the Caribbean in the early twentieth century. Through these interventions, the US maintained a tropical trade empire, and sought to maintain control of the Panama Canal. Many of the interventions were taken on behalf of American economic interests: an American-owned sugar plantation for example, or the interests of the United Fruit Company (among others).

The US also simply hung around, keeping soldiers in several central and South American countries in order to ensure "good men" were elected to government (spoilers: they weren't).
