In a move no one saw coming, Bryan Kohberger has pleaded guilty to the murders of four University of Idaho students. After years of claiming innocence, he stood in court and admitted everything: avoiding the death penalty in exchange for four consecutive life sentences with no parole and no appeal.

The plea came just days after a judge blocked his final attempts to delay trial and push alternate suspect theories. Along with his confession, prosecutors revealed chilling new details: his car circling the victims’ home, the bloody chair, and disturbing evidence left behind at the scene.

Some families say they’re at peace. But Kaylee Goncalves’ father called the plea deal “a deal with the devil.” And now, with no trial and no explanation, the victims’ families will speak at sentencing on July 23. Was this true justice, or just the fastest way to end the case?
