The K98k was Germany’s standard-issue rifle at the war’s outbreak. It was accurate, reliable, and relatively easy to produce. In this system, rifles like the K98k played a supporting role, making high rates of fire less essential.
Attempts to replace it began with the semi-automatic Gewehr 41, but this design suffered from reliability issues. The improved Gewehr 43 came too late in the war to be produced in sufficient numbers. It was also more complex and expensive to manufacture at a time when German industry was under intense Allied bombing and resource shortages.
The Sturmgewehr 44, the first true assault rifle, was revolutionary—offering automatic fire with controllable recoil and a shorter intermediate cartridge. But it, too, was introduced in limited numbers late in the war. Producing enough to replace the K98k across the entire Wehrmacht was impossible by 1944–45.
Ultimately, the K98k endured not because it was the best possible weapon, but because it was proven, available, and logistically feasible in a total war scenario where time and resources were in short supply.
