Mumtaz Mahal was the favorite wife of the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan. She lost her life giving birth to their 14th child together.
The emperor then decided to build Taj Mahal which is a mausoleum to house the tomb of his wife.
Construction started in 1632, and it took 20 years, 22,000 people, and a thousand elephants to build. It’s estimated that it cost 1 billion dollars to build in today’s money.
It’s located in the city of Agra in India, and it has a blend of Indian, Persian, and Islamic styles.
It actually also holds the tomb of Shah Jahan himself as well.
Around 7 to 8 million people visit it each year and in 1983 it was designated as a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE.
