At night, fireworks fill the sky against the backdrop of a sea of lanterns, and romance hangs heavy in the air.
Track 16
A Lantern Rite Journey
Part 3: The Romance of Liyue
This is probably my favorite arrangement in the album, and definitely my favorite arrangement of this piece online. Other arrangements may be slower or focus more on the beautiful melody, but for me, one of the defining characteristics of the originals is how so many different instruments come in at different points to really create an air of busyness that's tempered by the overall sweeping mood.
To accomplish that, I naturally used multiple voices, which made the first part a bit trickier to coordinate. For example, at 0:38, the run in the middle voice is a part of the original that I'm always delighted to hear, but no piano cover I found attempted to replicate it, and I get why. But for me, I slid it into the middle voice to make it work, and it actually sounds pretty pleasant since the jump actually helps make it lighter.
At the keychange, many other arrangements opt to immediately go into big arpeggios to give it the sweeping feel, but for me, I want the climax to be at the recap of this motif later, so I instead replicate what the strings are doing for the left hand.
The pizz section was a bit of a last minute decision. Previously, I still held pedal through it, but I think it sounded a lot better dry, which is how I ended up recording it.
And finally, the big sweeps feel so joyous and happy in a theatrical way.
I absolutely love this piece and the magic in it, and I hope you enjoy my interpretation of it!
