When it comes to industrial automation cybersecurity, it’s best to take advantage of existing industry standards and best practices. For the IEC 62443 standard, we can look at how different standards apply to different stakeholders. For product suppliers. They really need to be focused on the four one and four two portions of the standards. For system integrators, the 2-4 and 3-2 portions identify the steps with which they would integrate and implement a system, as well as the risk assessment portion.

For the asset owner, there are procedural requirements in 2-1 about how to operate and maintain that system over time. They also need to think about all the system integrators building that system. What sort of system security requirements do they need to meet and what should they be asking for vendors and equipment suppliers?
