Our Renovation project had been abandoned for over 30 years.
We spent many hours last year clearing the land of ivy, brambles, holly and bracken. It was 30ft / 9m tall.
By the time we had cleared a patch, taken the weeds to the déchetterie and returned, new growth had started.
At the risk of polarizing opinions, can I ask peoples views on NO DIG or Double DIG?
I'm both skeptic and a dig novice....
Even over the winter months ivy, hazel and holly have grown lifting the plastic weed barrier.
Previously, we have used the double dig method with huge rewards. Mixing cow manure and home made compost into the soil.
The soil at our renovation project is right next to a huge pond with a couple of natural springs also under the land.
There are huge trees such as oak, ash, walnut, chestnut etc giving plenty of annual leaf mulch.
We're pretty convinced this soil is extremely healthy and quite deep. It just need tilling.
We had hazel trees that grew over 20 feet in one year. Grass grows 12 inches in 6 weeks.
The main problem, as we see it, is the dominant crops on the land are ivy and holly and nothing is going to kill them.
If we use the cardboard in the 'No Dig' method to block the ivy and holly, we'll be back to square one within a couple of days.
The wood we cut down last year and left out in the soil has started to rot. The ivy and holly is still green and fresh.
It would take years for the roots to rot and become water channels for worms. Surely they need to be dug out?
There are areas of our garden where no dig may work, but where the ivy and holly are well established, we are unconvinced.
I do suffer badly from frozen shoulder, so this is really my joints begging for someone to convince me, I don't have to excavate an acre of land...
At the moment my shoulder is in the NO DIG camp. My brain is in the Double Dig camp. Help!
What are peoples experiences of no dig on seriously weed infested land?
We have loads of alpaca manure from our friends at Chez Paille Gites
