Let's take today's sound as an example, we're creating water dropplets, a well known sound effect used in psychedelic music using Serum but in my opinion, it's better to be made using Sylenth1 or any VA synthesizer.
For that, we need a saw wave playing at a low level, the oscillator should be clicking. The oscillator should then feed into a bandpass 24db/oct (or 12db/oct) filter. It's super important to choose the right synthesizer as the whole sound depends on the characteristics of the filtre's resonance when pushed to right below self resonating.
The sound then feeds into an optional distortion, in this case the disotrtion will tame the high resonance of the filter, making it less harsh on the ears while still giving the sound a gritty and raw characther, specially when working with software synthesizers that tends to have clean signal paths.
For this example I went with the stombox distortion algorithm found in Serum.
And that's it, you can add an EQ to roll off the lower frequencies and the patch is better played with a good colorful delay.
