This is a deep dive / video essay exploring pop music’s obsession shifting from rap to country and how an artist like Post Malone has navigated this change. Today we will discuss the rise, fall & rise again of an American pop star, Post Malone.
2024 is the year of country music. It’s dominating the charts & selling out stadiums, while also platforming a ton of rising artists now destined to become household names (Zach Bryan, Kacey Musgraves). Not only has this caught the attention of record label executives but some of the biggest stars in music. Beyoncé dropped her masterpiece, “Cowboy Carter” earlier this year, Lana Del Rey plans to release a Jack Antonoff-produced country album in the coming months but neither have done it bigger than Post Malone.
The country album & rebrand of Post Malone come off the heels of a rocky few years for the “Sunflower” singer. His last two albums, “Twelve Carat Toothache” & “AUSTIN” failed to generate the usual frenzy a Posty album tends to cause and the artist hadn’t had a genuine hit record since 2019’s “Circles.” Posty even told The New York Times he felt he had “lost his sheen” as a hitmaker. That was until he saw what was happening in Nashville.
His latest album “F-1 Trillion” is a full on country album with a guest list of legends new and old like Tim McGraw, Chris Stapleton, Lainey Wilson, Jelly Roll, Hank Williams, Jr., ERNEST & HARDY to name a few. It sported Post’s sixth number 1 single and a song of the summer contender. The record also includes some of his most personal work to date. The song “Yours” being dedicated to his daughter and is about the eventual day that his kid will get married.
Post has been welcomed into the genre with open arms & recently performed at the Grand Ole Opry and the country music festival, Stagecoach. This new acceptance though has had him open up more about his early days in the industry & how the accusations of cultural appropriation drove him down a negative path.
