Soybean meal is the most plentiful source of vegetable protein in the world and is the byproduct obtained after extracting oil from soybeans. The meal contains 47-49% protein and approximately 3% fiber. Meal constituents include flour, soy protein concentrate (SPC), soy protein isolate (SPI), soy molasses, and soy hulls.
US Soybean meal is for use in animal feed, particularly poultry and swine and aqua culture. The presence of the rich source of protein in soybean meal has also resulted in its increased usage as nutrient-rich food products for humans. Soybean meal is also used in a variety of industrial applications. Industry has explored the application of soybean meal for cost reduction and as a sustainable replacement for petro-based raw materials. Research funded by United Soybean Board (USB) has shown that soy can be chemically modified to improve its performance in several areas, some of which are commercial or near commercialization today.
