Well. Here it is. Animenz’s This Game.

I’m actually releasing this earlier than I expected to. I had it planned to release in May so that I could put out more of the stuff that I recorded in the fall, but since I just hit -200- 400 subs off of my Animenz reaction video (), I figured I’d celebrate with something special.

It’s interesting to me how in the anipiano world, how good a player is is frequently measured by how well they’ve played Animenz’s harder arrangements (read: Unravel), but somehow, despite only posting 1 Animenz cover so far (and a lesser known one too), I’ve gained an interesting amount of clout as a pianist already.

So here’s my vindication. I mean, if I’m going to react to more Animenz in the future, I should at least prove that I can do some of the things I’m talking about, right?

But for people who have come to my streams, this is nothing new cuz you’ve already heard me play this at my 100 sub special. So technically I spoiled my own surprise. Oops.

All that being said, I really, really love this arrangement. It’s just so much fun to play. The notes roll off the fingers, the melody is carried powerfully, there’s a strong sense of freedom and grandeur, and the dynamic range and variety of touch that can be utilized is incredible. Every time I play this, I feel like I am soaring over Disboard with Jibril, outwitting my opponents by the skin of my teeth with Sora and Shiro, or sprinting through Love or Loved 2 with Izuna.

And of course, the sense of pure confidence and power radiates from every note of this song: a confidence borne of unflappable resolve that borders on arrogance, and a power that comes from a perfect record of wins achieved through sheer skill and perseverance. There is not a moment of weakness nor of hesitance; only a sprint forward to a better, brighter future that's just within your grasp if you continue to strive and work for it.

It strongly parallels how I feel about my channel. I want this to grow and continue having a positive impact on people, and like heck I’ll sit back and wait passively for the algorithm to hopefully boost my videos some day. It’s time to run forward and grind to beat This Game!

No wonder there are moments in this video when I visibly smile. Despite practicing sometimes being a grind, despite making videos sometimes being a drag, and despite recording days that seem to last forever, somehow, some way, like Izuna, I find myself having the time of my life. And I really hope that you got that sense from me playing this arrangement.

I recorded this in December the same day that I recorded the Shield Hero ED and Dear Love. This was also literally the last take of the day. And somehow, I still had enough energy to ball out and have a ton of fun. Sure, there are technical errors. But I hope that even through all those, you can hear my ideas, thoughts, and emotions that went into performing this piece. It was a good day for recording I guess haha.

It’s actually interesting because even in the month after recording this, it’s already become so much more comfortable in my fingers and my interpretation has already changed. Those last few clicks that I wanted that would have felt strained in this take I did on stream, and even if you compare this take and the one on my stream, how I played on stream differs in places in regards to percussiveness of the left hand, the pedaling is drier, and right hand is slightly better phrased in the chords.

Learning and playing made listening to other This Game covers a lot of fun. Most of the time I’ll listen to a piece before I learn it to get a sense for where things are, but while learning I won’t really listen to other people’s stuff analytically so that I can formulate my own ideas. After I “finish” my interpretive work, I’ll go and listen to a lot of other covers to gather ideas and try them out. So the new percussiveness in my left hand was inspired by Halcyon’s cover (), and the lighter feel in the chords are inspired by Animenz’s (). I talk a lot about how I like to phrase in long strings on stream, and I would say that that’s where I differ the most from them too, even in both hands.

And as for Animenz's new arrangement of This Game, I guess I'll make a WattKeys mashup of both at some point.

Oh and I guess I made half an AMV this time as well lol.

Music is just so much fun, and I’m really blessed to have this platform to share with all of you.

Well, until next time!
