On 23 October 1989, ITN's David Smith reported on the growing independence movement in Soviet Ukraine. Speaking to those involved in the broad coalition, Smith discovered the movement was distinct from the independence movements gaining ground in the Baltic states. While Ukrainians wished for a sovereign state that recognised their unique linguistic and cultural identity, free of Russian domination, there was no desire to leave the USSR. Rather, Ukrainian nationalists hoped to renegotiate the terms of their membership, some seeing the ultimate goal as comparable to membership of the European Community.
