Following the death of Notre Dame College student Nayeem Hasan at capital’s Gulistan on November 24, the student protests since November 20 demanding half fare in public transports turned into demonstration to press their nine-point demand that also include road safety.
The protests were fuelled further following the death of Mainuddin Islam, a Secondary School Certificate Examinee from Ekramunnesa Boys’ High School, at capital’s Rampura on November 29 night. Angry locals, immediately after the accident, vandalised and torched at least 12 buses.
Since Tuesday morning, thousands of students from several educational institutions in Dhaka gathered at Rampura where Mainuddin died and his friends and relatives began wailing there. The students kept the road blocked for about five hours since 10:30am and checked the vehicles to see whether the drivers were carrying valid driving licences and documents of the vehicles.
They chanted slogans and carried handwritten posters reading different slogans to press home their demands.
They also vowed to continue their protests until their demands were met.
