Alligators are quite common in Florida! The state has an estimated population of around 1.3 million alligators, making encounters fairly routine in many areas. You'll most likely spot them in:

Very common locations:
- Everglades National Park and surrounding wetlands
- State parks with lakes, ponds, or marshes
- Golf course water hazards
- Retention ponds in residential areas
- Canals and waterways throughout South Florida

What to expect:
Most Floridians who spend time outdoors will see alligators occasionally, especially if they live near water. They're particularly visible during warmer months when they're more active and during mating season (April-June). You might see them sunbathing on banks, floating in water with just their eyes and nostrils showing, or swimming.

Safety note:
While common, alligators generally avoid humans and attacks are rare (only about 8-10 bites per year statewide). They become more concerning when they lose their natural fear of humans, often due to feeding.

The frequency of sightings really depends on where you are in Florida - if you're in the Everglades or rural areas with lots of waterways, you might see them regularly. In more urban areas, it's less common but still possible, especially around any permanent water features.
