On this day, 1959, Harold Macmillan returned as Prime Minister with a victory of over 100 seats. It was the third successive electoral victory for the Conservative Party, a feat which had not been achieved by any party in over a century.
The Conservative Party's victory was largely down to them harnessing the image as the party of prosperity with slogans like 'You've never had it so good' and 'Life's better with the Conservatives'.
ITN broadcast a special election programme to cover events as Britain took to the polls on the 8 October. Some of this was included in our Alternative Election footage, and we now include the broadcast in full.
