I love trying out guitars that are slightly different, and the mini Wilkinson humbuckers on the V100WR are just that. These pickups seem to occupy a round somewhere between single coils and humbuckers, yet have the advantages of both of them!
Find out more about the Vintage V100WR here:
Mini humbuckers are not a common pickup, for some reason. You usually hear about them in relation to the Gibson Les Paul Deluxe, or Firebird models. There’s a few more quirky guitars that feature them too, like the Ernie Ball St. Vincent signature model, or the Epiphone Crestwood Custom. But apart from that, there’s not much, especially on the more affordable side of things. Happily, Vintage seem to be catering to the Les Paul Deluxe crowd with this guitar.
The V100WR features some pretty decent specs for the price (which seems to be around €430 or $599 as of December 2021) – a mahogany body and neck, rosewood fingerboard, Wilkinson tune-o-matic bridge, a Graph Tech nut and Grover tuners.
The Wilkinson WMC301 Mini Double Coils are the cherry on the cake, and in this video I put them through their paces by playing a bunch of riffs in my favorite genres to see how they handle it! That means everything from clean pop, folk and indie strumming to classic and hard rock, some alt rock and some punk, and even a bit of metal in Drop D!
How does the guitar handle it all? Watch on to find out!

My setup was as follows: I ran the V100WR into my Hughes & Kettner Black Spirit 200 head, using my Greer Lightspeed for the overdrive and my Revv G3 for the heavy distortion sounds. The amp went from the Red Box DI straight into my Focusrite Scarlett 2i4, which went into Logic Pro X. That's it. No post-processing on the sounds was done.
